Telluride is the most populous town of San Miguel County in the southwestern part of Colorado. Formerly a silver mining camp, Telluride has become a major getaway for travelers looking for a bit of excitement and adventure. When you book a hotel Telluride offers many great activities that you can experience during your trip to this beautiful state.

The town of Telluride is surrounded by steep forested mountains and cliffs, otherwise known as a box canyon. Gold was first discovered here in 1858, encouraging the first early settlements. The town was founded in 1878 but was named Columbia. There was, however, some confusion with Columbia in California, so the town's name was changed to Telluride and the post office solved any further confusion. The town was named after a metalloid element called tellurium, although this element was never actually found in the mountains of the area. There were numerous mining operations that searched for precious metals including lead, copper, zinc, silver and gold. Weathered ruins of old mining operations are scattered throughout the hillsides even today.

It wasn't until 1972 that another industry was established in Telluride and that was the skiing industry. The town's first ski resort was built and the rest was history, although not exactly overnight. The area gradually saw population growth and an incredible increase in tourism. Music and film festivals flourished. By the 1980s, the town was known as "Colorado's best kept secret", which only increased its popularity as a resort community.

Regardless of which hotel Telluride provides, every accommodation is close to the action. Get an incredible view of the community and surrounding landscape by taking a helicopter ride or by going mountain biking. Take a skiing lesson or indulge in another winter sport. Telluride's Town Park boasts plenty of sports venues including places to play basketball, baseball, tennis, beach volleyball, soccer and even a place to skateboard. The park also offers ice hockey, Nordic skiing and ice-skating. The whole family can enjoy a fishing pond, playground and grilling stations for picnics. With plenty of room to run around and play, Town Park is a must-see.

If you want to experience the outdoors but have always considered yourself the indoors type, check out the San Juan Outdoor School. This unique school is the prime source for mountain adventures. Expert instructors and naturalists will guide you on adventures in rock climbing, mountaineering, backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, backpacking, hiking, ice climbing and more. They even feature kids' camps and women's adventures. You can also take a course in avalanche education.

There's no better way to experience the small town feel of Telluride than by walking the streets. The Wilkinson Public Library is located in a historic building and houses an impressive collection of books, audio books, eBooks and DVDs. The library provides free Internet and Wi-Fi access to visitors as well as a story time for kids, yoga classes and movies.

Even though this community is a small town, there are plenty of exceptional art galleries in Telluride. Each month the community showcases an Art Walk and features artists living and working in the area. Visiting the galleries and participating in the Art Walk are free activities.

You simply cannot visit Telluride without stopping by the historic Sheridan Opera House. Built by J.A. Segerberg in 1913, the opera house served as a vaudeville theater and cultural center that featured variety shows, orchestras and touring theater troupes. It was saved from being demolished in the 1990s and has undergone restoration efforts by the Colorado Historical Society. Today, the Sheridan Opera House is a hub for live music, movies, plays and other cultural events important to the town. Even if you can't catch a play or live event, join the historical walking tour. You won't be sorry you did.
